Monitoring of the aging of magnetic nanoparticles using Mössbauer spectroscopy
Magnetic nanoparticles made of magnetite have the advantage to be biocompatible and to have a good saturation magnetisation. In this work we show that magnetite nanoparticles change their magnetic and chemical characteristics over time, depending on their storage conditions. To determine the oxidation state of the iron in the core of the nanoparticles Mössbauer spectroscopy was used at 4.2 K. T...
متن کاملWhite-light-emitting magnetite nanoparticle-polymer composites: photonic reactions of magnetic multi-granule nanoclusters as photothermal agents.
Magnetite nanoparticles combined with polymers produce white-light emission under multiphoton laser irradiation. Understanding the photonic reaction in magnetite-polymer composites is critical for application of magnetite NPs as photothermal agents. Laser irradiated magnetite nanoparticle-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composites exhibit fluorescence due to the carbon double-bond formation re...
متن کاملPreparation of superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles by reverse precipitation method: contribution of sonochemically generated oxidants.
Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles were successfully prepared by a novel reverse precipitation method with the irradiation of ultrasound. TEM, XRD and SQUID analyses showed that the formed particles were magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)) with about 10nm in their diameter. The magnetite nanoparticles exhibited superparamagnetism above 200K, and the saturation magnetization was 32.8 emu/g at 300 K. The sizes ...
متن کاملMagnetite Fe3O4 Nanocrystals: Spectroscopic Observation of Aqueous Oxidation Kinetics†
Low-temperature oxidation of aqueous magnetite nanoparticles to maghemite has been monitored via the loss of near-IR optical absorbance. The kinetics closely follows the diffusion in a sphere model as suggested by previous literature reports. The temperature dependence of the diffusion constant is described by an Arrhenius equation with an activation energy of 21.0 kcal/mol. No intermediate opt...
متن کاملMembrane lipid peroxidation by the peroxidase-like activity of magnetite nanoparticles.
We report that Fe3O4 nanoparticles are able to catalyse lipid peroxidation in liposomes at acidic but not neutral pH. The oxidation is dependent on either pre-existing lipid peroxides or hydrogen peroxide as a substrate. This is the first evidence for metal oxide nanoparticles as peroxidase mimetics oxidising biomolecules in a relevant environment.
